About The Abaco's

Abaco is a 120-mile necklace of islands with often-uninhabited cays and beaches. Located 160 miles East of south Florida. The Abacos is a chain of 150 cays - meaning small islands. Only about 10 cays are inhabited. Great Abaco is ringed by a chain of barrier cays. See Map

In Abaco our #1 industry is tourism and fishing is #2. The Abacos are most famous for private powdery white sand beaches and some of the worlds best dive and snorkel sites. Our Treasure Cay Beach was voted among the worlds top ten beaches by National Geographic readers and the publishers and readers of Scuba Diving Magazine have voted The Islands of The Bahamas #1 again for diving with 'Big Animals.' Abaco is also home to the third largest barrier reef in the world.

The sea life and fish are abundant. Go fishing or diving for lobster (when in season) and conch. Rent a boat and go deep sea fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, or bone fishing in the flats. Or there are local guides to take you. There are also diving, snorkeling, kayaking, bird watching and dolphin tours. see our list of Guest Services for more information.

We can help you plan a guided day trip with a tour company or provide you with information if you feel like being a little adventurous on island and venturing out on your own tour. There are several surrounding Cays (Keys) or locations on the other end of Great Abaco that make great day trips that we can help arrange for you.

Man-O-War Cay: "Home of the boat builders!" Man-O-War Cay has given birth to many talented carpenter who can turn the hardiest Abaco tree into the hardiest seaworthy vessel. Made necessary from a time in Abaco's past when plying the waters was the only way to ensure one's family would have a livelihood of "fruits of the sea," the descendants of the Loyalists who populated Man-O-War, learned how to carve and plane and taught these skills to their sons for generations. There are shops, marinas, and a ferry service dedicated to these vehicles of the oceans. Boaters have been known to make Man-O-War Cay their destination of choice. Known to many as the "dry island," Man-O-War has no liquor stores. Once a haven for the actual green turtle species. sponging, and pineapples, Green Turtle Cay is a favorite for anglers, scuba divers, sun worshipers and souvenir hunters.
